Reviewing Blade runner and Terminator the original:
Blade runner plot:
Blade runner is set in Los Angles in the year 2019 Harrison Ford plays a retired blade runner Rutger Hauer who's job is to kill which is called (retiring) 4 replicates that have hijacked a ship and have returned to Earth seeking their maker. A replicate is a artificial organism who looks and acts exactly like a human even to the extent of having memories uploaded to their system the replicates also have great strength so they are much dominant over normal humans. Blade Runners use special tests to distinguish the difference between a replicate and real human. The replicates are trying to fiend their maker so they can try to find a solution to make them live longer so therefore they will be unstoppable. Its Rutger's job to track down and retire these replicates before they reach their maker.
Terminator plot:
A cyborg is sent from the future on a deadly mission. He has to kill Sarah Connor, a young woman whose life will have a great significance in years to come. Sarah has only one protector Kyle Reese also sent from the future. The Terminator uses his exceptional intelligence and strength to find Sarah, Kyle Reese has to find a way to stop the seemingly indestructible cyborg before he terminates Sarah Connor.
How do these films relate to Science Fiction:
We can clearly see in both films that there is evidence of both soft and hard science fiction. For example at the start of the Terminator movie both Kyle Reese and the cyborg have used time travel to appear. What is similar in both movies that there are evidence of advanced artificial organisms. Arnold Schwarzenegger who plays the cyborg is depicted as an indestructible with amazing strength this is consistent with blade runner becuase Harrison playing Rutger Hauer plays a similar role to Kyle Reese Micheal Biehn. Rutger must also face these super replicates which have similar properties to the terminator.
Compare and contrast these films:
In both these films they both are similar to do with the artificial lifeforms which the main character have to destroy the which are the replicates and the Terminator. Although these films have different aspects to them; both of these films are classified in the cyberpunk subcategory and both have evidence of apocalyptic subcategory as well. But the main theme's are different in the movies Blade Runner is more to do with the ethics of artificial lifeforms and whether destroying them is right and what it is to be Human. terminator is more to do with how a cyborg mission is to terminate this lady but then discovers that it likes the humans and decides to stop its mission and help the humans. Also these two films are similar in the sense that they both fall under the category of soft Science Fiction being more focused on character development and less focused on scientific accuracy. Although Blade runner does have evidence of hard science fiction when in the movie one of the replicates meets its maker and discusses the possibilities of extending its lifetime and the maker disagrees and refers to science like chemistry and physic to explain how this isn't possible.
