Chapter 9 Locke and Demosthenes

Who is John Locke?

* John Locke (1632-1704) was one of the greatest philosophers in Europe at the end of the seventeenth century
* He wanted a democracy instead of a monarchy
* His ideas influenced the motives of both the American and French Revolution
* What He wanted is that individuals should be allowed to be indivudals (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness)
* Some aspect of freedom you must give up to become part of a society (Social Contract)

Who is Demosthenes?
* He wanted Athens to return to its former glory
* He went on to devote his most productive years to opposing Macedon's expansion. He idealized his city and strove throughout his life to restore Athens' supremacy and motivate his compatriots against Philip II of Macedon. He sought to preserve his city's freedom and to establish an alliance against Macedon,
