Chapter 3 Enders Game Questions

1. (19) What does Ender get chosen for in the end? Why does he get picked?
2. What reservations does Ender have?
3. (22) What does the soldier say about religion and large families? So is this a religious or secular society? Why?
4. What does ‘Third’ mean? Why is this such a big deal?
5. (22) What do we learn about the ‘society’ what countries on earth make it up?
6. What big decision does Ender have to make? What are the reasons against it/for it? What does he decide? Why? What would you decide?

Answers:

1)      Ender gets chosen by Graff to go to battle school; he gets picked because the military see how the kids handle not being monitored. Ender gets chosen because he was able to take care of himself in a difficult situation without the monitor.

2)      Before he tells Graff that he wants to go to battle school Ender considers which life would be better going to school and have to worry about peter. Or going to battle school away from Stilson and Peter but away from his parents and Valentine.

3)      Graff says that having over two children is unthinkable and Ender’s father is the 7^th child out of nine which is criminal. Graff says that in order to leave his family he had to renounce his religion. Therefore we can infer that it is a secular society because families are forced to renounce their faith to better their family so we can infer that to the government religion in society isn’t important.

4)      The term third refers to the third child in the family since the government only allow families to have to kids having an extra child is frowned open and even punished.

5)      We learn from the text that Enders mum comes from Utah and dad comes from Poland we can infer that America and Europe are in existent and the same government control both of these countries.

6)      Ender has to decide whether he is going to battle school and remain at home with his family. Ender has to decide if he goes to battle school he won’t have to go to school anymore and he will be far away from Stilson and Peter but also if he leaves he will be away from his parents and Valentine. I would probably decide to stay home because we know from the previous chapter that even though Peter is so tough and mean on Ender he stills loves him as a brother and probably has a soft spot. And also Since Ender already took care of Stilson at school he will think twice about trying to bully ender again so I think staying home would have been the better option.
