 Portia uses two approaches to try to persuade in this speech, firstly he uses religion then the last two lines he uses the idea if he goes through with a pound of flesh he will go to jail

In this speech Portia metepohrically describes mercy as being a trait that kings deread of and even described as an earthly power which God also posses. This speech is very religious becuase it gives examples of mercy being a way to salvation and a way of proper justice

Is it cruel to keep animals in cages:

Could you imagine spending your life confined to a cage and not having the freedom to do what you want or wish? Could you imagine being kept as a pet in a cage not being able to live in your natural habitat?  I strongly believe that it is cruel to keep animals in cages.

Animals kept in cages and in captivity can obviously not communicate on how they feel so us humans will never understand what feelings animals have being kept in the cages that we make. Animals belong in the wild and keeping them confined should be a crime! Today there are laws stating the legal rights that every human being has in today's society why shouldn't animals have some rights too.

Animals that are either being kept at zoos or being kept as pets at homes should all be treated well. People must understand that when you pay money to buy an animal and bring it into your home you have an obligation to feed and take care of this animal and therefore treat it as part of the family. Many cases are showed on Tv and even in the newspaper of people either comercially or at their own house exposeing their animals to cruel, harsh living conditions which I believe isn't fair!

I strongly believe that our future generations must understand that animals should be treated with respect and we as their owners should have a responsibility to furfill this obligation. I strongly believe that it is imperative to free our confined caged wildlife so they can be happy living as part of our families.

Equality reality or ideal

Imagine a world where everyone had a house to live in, a place to work and access to a high standard of education. This is what I think an equal world would look like. Unfortunately, this is the ideal, and not the reality for many people in our world. More than 385 million people live on less than $1 a day. It is the responsibility of those people who have a house to live in, a place to work and access to a high standard of education to help this ideal become a reality. In order to demonstrate this point I will explore Olga’s story.

Olga, a lady from a little town in Ukraine called Kiev, was born into poverty. She finished school in year 8 and was unable to send her kids to school and was living on food from their small backyard garden. Her husband was unable to work becuase there were no jobs available. Olga lives in a shack about the size of a 2 car garage and in the freezing winter the family was struggling to survive.


All of us in this room are privileged to live in a house where it is warm and comfortable, and we have luxuries like TV, ( air conditioning, electric lighting, computers and other electrical appliances?)  To someone like Olga, these luxuries that we take for granted, would be a Godsend. In 1996,500 million people were found to be homeless worldwide. We are the exception to the rule –  Olga’s story is not uncommon – most people  never glimpse the luxuries that we have come to expect. We have a responsibility to do something about this.

Another aspect of wellbeing is financial security. My dream is to finish high school and travel overseas to strive for a tennis scholarship in a college in the US. I would be able to combine my passion for tennis with University education. During the summer break I would be able to travel playing tennis all around America.

After my schooling I would either be able to play professionally or I would be able to get a job using the degree I got from one of the top Universities in the world. People like Olga have very little opportunity in life to strive for their dreams, let alone dream in the first place. Could you imagine finishing school in year 8 then getting a job and supporting your family?

Education is a basic human right. In 2006, 40 to 50 percent of people in eastern Europe dropped out of school before finishing. The main reasons for leaving were living in poverty and leaving to get a job to support their family. Olga's education started in Kindergarten and she never got the best out of her schooling, Olga was always worrying about money and food all through her school and had to take many days off to take care of her family. At Knox we are privileged to have a nice school to go to and the opportunity to participate in  sport and other after school activities - we do not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from, we just open the fridge.I strongly believe that people like us who enjoy a wonderful quality of life are responsible to help these less fortunate
 
Through education that people who are under privileged can improve their situation and that fortunate people can be encouraged to take responsibility. Once everyone has easy access to education, they will have a better chance of securing a brighter future. Education will not only benefit kids today, but will also benefit future generations.

It doesn't take much. My mum actually sponsored Olga and because of this She was able to bring her family to Australia to enjoy a better life than back in the Ukraine. Olga and her husband were able to work and buy a house and send their kids to school.

Equality is only a reality for part of the globe today. For others it's still an unreachable ideal. We, as the fortunate few, should be encouraged to do something positive about this. Olga's story is one example of a small act of kindness that made a huge difference in someone's life. Think of Haiti when the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit and people were dying every day. Then the world heard the call and over 15 billion dollars were raised to help these people in need. Acts big or small, that can make the world a better, more egalitarian, place.

Nature of Task:

Persuasive texts are designed to position a point of view(opinion - thesis).

Texts that successfully persuade are usually highly emotive (emotional words + influence listener/audience emotions) and effectively balance opinions with facts (research- logos).

Persuasive texts can make sweeping generalisations (uniformed conclusion), rely on stereotypes and hyperbole and yet still seem credible.

This is because a combination of objective (facts) and subjective (opinion) information is usually used to persuade.

Careful use of repetition and high modality words(persuasion techniques) can emphatically convey the composer’s purpose if it is counterbalanced with the use of statistics, expert evidence and product/idea endorsement from authoritative sources(ethos)(objective).

Moreover, effective incorporation of anecdotes(personal story), analogies (comparison) and inclusive language (we, us, ours - include the audience) (techniques) can personalise the message and help connect the composer and their text with its audience.

I have a dream that all the proud Knox athletes will step up on those blocks and swim their hearts out only to hear the loud shouts of hundreds of proud Knox boys cheering "fire up Knoxy fire up"

I have a dream that the imports of Trinity and the rookies from Waitara will shiver in their shoes as the booming sounds of the Knoxy crowd overwhelm them as their support can only produce a golf clap. And the douzens of proud men of Knox smashing through the water leaving all other boys in the dust.

I have a dream that all the knox men from angus, adamson, bydren, mckenzie, makarth, montgomory and sinclair will join together in arms and forget about the house rivalries and fight against the other schools, for in CAS winning is an amazing glorious feat and if we don't combine we will never win.

I have a dream that buses will be filled emptying hundreds of pumped knoxy boys at sydney olympic park ready to cheer their hearts out until every single Knox athlete has smashed their hand against the end of the pool signifying their victory. 

I have a dream that without a doubt the stands will be filled and with your support so we can cheer and push our knoxy swimmers to victory so at last we can hold up the CAS cup. Even without a win it is enivadable that all the people will be able to hear will be the loud chants of Knoxy boys cheering on the swimmers to victory. I have a dream that you will be there!

World News Priority

I strongly believe that tragic events such as the Queensland floods and the recent earthquake in New Zealand should have absolute priority over events such as the New York fashion week.

Firstly world disasters should have news priority over events such as New York fashion week becuase a disaster where people are losing their homes and some people losing family and loved ones is absolutely devastating and should be shown on the news so people are able to be aware of what is happening in parts of the world. People must understand that even though we live in different nations is that there are other people out there and even though they don't live with us they still need out support.

Even for fashion supporters events such as the NZ earthquake or the Queensland floods should make people turn around and totally forget and think about the people who have lost their homes and are being evacuated to safety. Would you confidently be able to say on national television that you'd prefer to watch a fashion show over hearing news about a event such as this?

On the 11th of January this year it was reported that the Queensland floods had killed 30 people and an additional 80 people were missing it was imperative that the floods were on the news becuase how were people to know if relatives living in areas in Queensland had been flooded. Also inspirational stories like ones of children stuck on rooftops of their house telling rescue teams when they arrive to take their parents before them. Stories like these inspire people to dig deep and donate for the cause so people who have lost everything can be given a little support from people all around Australia.

In conclusion it would be outrageous to show events like the Sydney fashion week on the news when events such as the Queensland floods and the NZ earthquake are taking place.
